When Mid Century Modern couples were buying sleek sofas and club chairs, Danish designer desks, dining sets and buffets, this is the type of wrought iron patio furniture they were putting on their patios, terraces and balconies. The transition from ponderous patterns resembling resembling wooden dining furniture to the Space Age styles like Woodard Sculptura and Bertoia happened gradually. So it is with this Salterini quintet. John B. Salterini’s quality American made patio set originated in Brooklyn, NY. This hip wrought iron table with tempered glass top and four matching black side chairs are prepped to restored in any color to suit your impressive decorating prowess. Its tables top measures 30” x 48” (a little bit wider than the usual Salterini table), with an apron that is gracefully cinched-in, and flared legs, reminiscent of women’s fashions of the day. The table features Medallion / Sombrero feet, Salterini's signature. The four chairs have a modern disk foot typical of late period Covington, Virginia made Salterini furniture. The crimped Leaf pattern on the table apron matches the leaves on the chairs, and the chair legs and crested back are typical of Salterini’s chair patterns going back into the 1940s! A 30” x 48” table suits four perfectly. You could pull in a couple of more chairs at the corners when a few friends are over for drinks and conversation. The seats have “half 13” iron mesh, so you will be able to sit on them year round, with or without tie on Sunbrella cushions. You’ll need to prime and paint the mesh at the same time as you paint or touch up the set. It’s mostly black right now, but you can see through to what was probably originally white or Salterini’s pale vintage yellow. Try something fun and send me a picture once you’ve repainted it.
